D6 – Sept 6 – Gulag

Today we have decided to go to Perm 36, the last gulag remaining as such in the former USSR. Can you believe that ?
This one was dedicated – so to speak – to intellectuals.
But before I talk about it, I need to tell you how we got there.

The Hostel had told us that we should go to the Central Bus Station (with the bus 67), and ask for a name they had put on a paper for us. We woke up at 6:30, where at the bus station at 8:00, had our bus at 8:35. The two of us felt asleep. Two hours later, we wake up and the bus driver stops and tells us the museum is around here. At least this is what we think he says. And he drops us here :

Once I have two feet on the floor I wonder if this was such a good idea. Where the F*** should we go now ? Within 10 seconds I have enough to think that:
A – I have 1 bottle of water and 3 biscuits in my jacket, it should be enough to survive 3/4 days
B – I have a fleece and a wind-breaker, I shouldn’t freeze that much
C- How many days is it going to take for someone to realize that we have vanished?
OK. Let’s think about something else. Indeed, we see kind of a road, let’s go.
Hum, I think this is the second bus station our Hostel was mentioning.

Looks like it doesn’t operate anymore…

OK, let’s walk for a while, I guess we have to cross that village over there….

Well, we keep walking for a while. There is only one road anyway, so we cannot loose our way. We are done with that village. We meet some people. When we say “museum” they tell us to keep walking. At least this is our interpretation.

Oh, look, on the right side of the road, it looks like an other bus stop. May be this is where the bus was supposed to bring us ?

We pass by the bus stop. Yeah, this was a bus stop. But nothing special there.
One more kilometer or so. And some rain. Finally we see a concrete building, the first one, it could be the Gulag Museum, couldn’t it ???

Though, is it open ???
Capture d’écran 2013-09-07 à 21.14.34

Yes it is. There is 1 cashier, and 1 guy in plastic boots, only speaking Russian, who is ready to bring us on the crime scenes…
It doesn’t matter much that we don’t speak the same language, the meaning is obvious.

This camp closed in the 1980′.
The trees around had been cut so that prisoners couldn’t find out in which part of Russia they had been sent. Once, though, a biologist found out thanks to the birds songs…

(…)

OK, we need to go, we have a train to catch in the afternoon. We take the same road back.

After one hour of walk, we reach the main road again. Perm is 100 km from here. We just need to wait for a bus to come. In case of rain, we can always sleep in that old gas station next by…

After thirty minutes, a bus is finally coming, and we will catch our train for Yekaterinburg right in time.

  1. Ouh là ! Sacrée aventure ! Un peu flippant tout de même. Un peu plus et vous faisiez le remake version russe de Massacre à la Tronçonneuse, vu le coin paumé !
