D20 – Sept 20 – On the way back to Irtkusk

I don’t know if it comes from the cold shower at the back from the vegetable garden, or if it was meant to happen anyway, but I have a cold. My nose is completely blocked.

Today we have spent six hours in a jeep with a bench of backpackers, on the way back to Irtkusk. Landscapes were awesome. Lonely cow on the side of the road, yacks even, old trucks from the USSR Times (or from Mad Max, I still wonder)…

In addition to the foreigners, two local ladies were chatting and chatting next to me.

I would like to share more details but I’m really very tired. So I’ll just share two additional pictures from the market, where we have bought some supplies for the train we take tomorrow our new direction : Ulan Ude…

  1. I like the pictures with small and big smoked fishes. I want to eat them NOW! and the picture of two women in a truck is a masterpiece. It is SO Russia. However when I read the stories you publish on different nations and their history, I realize that this is not as easy as it seems. With so many nations in one country who were isolated until 90′.
When I have read that you booked the jeep trip to taiga, I got so jealous. Even mad that I can not see such landscapes myself. and smell the air. Though life is not as unfair. Visiting the new express road being built with Lafarge concrete and learning about the process, suddenly I felt the nature. As the road goes through the woods, and there was a first sunny day after one million of rainy ones you could feel that specific mixture of three leaves and the soil. Definitely you will clean your longs in Russia now a little bit after Paris. .

  2. Are you familiar with an old book titled: Kaput!, about one of the first westernerns’ journey on the transSiberian railway, sometime after the Russian revolution. Perhaps in the ’20s or ’30? Some incidents I’m sure you’d recognize–it would be interesting to see how much is still the same, 80 years later! Can’t locate the book now and don’t know the author. I read it 40 or 50 years ago but still remember it. Any idea what/where book might be? There are several more recent books with same title but not same story at all! Thanks and best wishes.
