D174. Feb 20. Roaming in Cairns

The landing in Cairns was beautiful.

Supernatural light behind the clouds, brown and sharp mountains, then rounded and green mounts, then a quicksilver river in the valley… Nature at its very best.

(my dad should like those four very short videos)

It looks tropical, isn’t it ? And it is ! In fact, North East Australia is only a fe hundred miles from Papua New Guinea. It gives an idea on the climate, doesn’t it ? Hot, wet, suffocating actually !!!

Not much to do in Cairns though. The city center looks like a chess grid, ten longitudinal streets, ten transversal streets, two grounds buildings, empty shops. Most of the people here are tourists, and during the day they are on tours, either at the rain forest, or at the great barrier reef…

Capture d’écran 2014-02-22 à 07.02.14The Vuitton shop has adopted the local architectural codes… at least I don’t feel disoriented! After a couple of hours entering every single diving shop, I have finally found a mask with interchangeable lenses, so that I can actually SEE. They even have googles designed with the same concept, I buy them as well. Ufff, what a relief !

Capture d’écran 2014-02-22 à 07.03.23it looks amazing ! Water smells salt and tastes chlorine, the artificial slope to get into the water is covered with sand, the pool bottom is made from beige concrete, and the pool ends in the sea…
