D229. Apr 16. KL Petronas towers… Oh, c’est haut…

Do you remember Entrapment (Haute Voltige), this film featuring Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta-Jones, organizing a robbery in the Petronas towers in the final seconds of the new 2000 millennium countdown, taking advantage of the so-called bug ?

Impressive from the top, impressive from the floor.

The towers’ facade of steel and glass is designed to resemble motifs found in islamic art, a reflection of Malaysia’s Muslim religion. Another Islamic influence on the design is that the cross section of the towers is based on a “Rub el Hizb”, albeit with circular sectors added to meet office space requirements.

For your general knowledge, here comes a listing of the highest towers on earth, at the very moment…

Burj Khalifa, Dubai, UAE, 210, 828m
Taipe 101, Taipe, Taiwan, 2004, 508m
Shanghai World Financial Center, Shanghai, China, 2008, 492m
International Commerce Center, Hong Kong, China, 2010, 484m
Petronas Twin Towers, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 1999, 452m
Ziong Tower, China, 2010, 450m
Willis Towers, Chicago, USA, 1974, 442m
Guangzhou International Financial Center, China 2010, 439m
Trump international hotel and tower, Chicago, 2009, 423m

That could be a theme for a world tour, isn’t it ? Visiting all those towers, discovering cities from the sky… A new book in the pipe for Yann Arthus-Bertrand !
