Soviet stigmates in Pristan, a former torpedo research center

Not far from reaching Karakol, we passed by a very strange place…
We could overlook the Mikhaylovka Inlet and a clutter of cranes, docks and warehouses. All were once part of the old Soviet top-secret ‘polygon’ for torpedo research.

Pristan (which means pier in Russian) is a nearby strip of lakeshore several kilometres long that includes a sea of dachas (holiday bungalows) to the northeast and a popular beach to the west. The old military zone villages of Mikhaylovka, Lipenka and certain parts of Pristan Prahevalsk are off limits to foreigners.

Strange atmosphere, isn’t it…

  1. Desolation, no ? or empty place ? I saw a documentary these last days about a city in northern Russia, one of the visited place was like this… It was terrifying, the most of the city is nowadays abondoned.

    • Yeah, and the ”top secret” torpedo research center at the poligon was well camouflaged cause it looks like a shitty slum!! :-O
