It is Tashkent’s most famous farmers market, topped by a giant green dome, is a delightful slice of city life spilling into the streets off Old Town’s southern edge.

Spices arranged in brightly colored mountains, sacks of grain, entire sheds dedicated to candy, dairy products and bread, interminable rows of freshly slaughtered live- stock, scores of the pomegranates, melons, persimmons, huge mutant tomatoes and whatever fruits are in season…

A surprising thing, here in Uzbekistan, is that people ask for pictures.

They would show me their products, proud of them, even though they knew I wasn’t interested in buying them.

When reading some guide books, you may get the impression than walking alone in such bazar can be tricky. It’s not. I can tell you it’s fare more safe than waking in the Forum les Halles in Paris.

On the other side of a big avenue, food booths are replaced by artcraft shops and cotton balls… Yes, cotton is still produced in the country, in spite of the ongoing ecological disaster of the Aral Sea…

It is open all day long, every day of the week, and that’s where the entire city comes to get fresh supplies.

That’s also where I was buying bread, cheese, olives, tomatoes, cucumbers for my meals.
