D177. Feb 23. Great barrier Reef

Today was the day: the Great Barrier Reef. Underneath, under those green waters, an amazing ecosystem is waiting for me…Capture d’écran 2014-02-23 à 12.17.10

It is 30 km from Cairns, more than two hours of catamaran.Capture d’écran 2014-02-23 à 12.18.45

It can be seen from outer space, it’s the world’s biggest single structure made by living organisms. And i’m there!Stefanius 158 cm

It is stretching for over 2,600 km (1,600 mi) over an area of approximately 344,400 square km (133,000 sq mi). Put together, it would cover the surface of Germany…

Elephant ear (sarcophyton sp.)  Here comes the elephant ear (sarcophyton)…

One of my favorites remains this one, even though we’ve already seen it in the Bali and Philippines shores…

On Thursday, we were in Amed, on the East coast of Bali, a fishermen village (above) and a touristic spot. We had a chance to explore the two famous snorkeling spots of this location: Jemeluk and Japanese Ship Wreck.
When I decided to take a gap year, the first thing i bought was a good quality snorkeling mask. I don’t know why this seemed so important at the time. May be because I remembered that time, in Mauritius, when I didn’t anything in the waters because of my poor eyes. So I bought a mask adapted to my vision, and equipped with a camera.

Of course, this as long before my friends offered me a GoPro camera for my trip.
So, here we are, perfect moment to compare both devices.

Beyond fishes, we also found a temple’ ruin in the waters. Though, it looks so perfect, so Indiana Jones (again), that i wonder if this is real, or just put here to please tourists…

The video above was shot with a GoPro. Good light, high resolution, Perfect.
One challenge though: Due to its wide wide angle, almost fish eye (haha), you need to be very close to the fishes.

The second video was shot with the mask, Liquid Image. The funny thing is that it looks like a video made in the 1970′, a bit yellowish sometimes, a bit blueish some others – Same thing with the pictures, of poor definition… Only the Super-8 sound is missing ! Not really the quality I expected,  but funny though… And in addition you get my hair in front of the lens, reinforcing the subjective camera effect.
